Some youtube channels are like crack. This guy takes old B-movies, trims out the dull bits, and reduces them to about 10 minutes each. Many of these are movies I remember from watching USA Up All Night (which is how I spent most of my weekends from 6th grade until I started college). The 10 minute versions are ideal because you get all of the plot and action with none of the crap in between. It's a lot like the way I remember a movie.

Thing is, when I watched these movies as a kid, I knew they were bad, but I didn't realize HOW bad, cheesy, and in some cases disturbing they were.

A colleague asked me to give a talk in his sophomore seminar class this coming Monday. I'm supposed to talk a bit about discrete math--what it is, which problems people like, and some applications. Here's a rough outline. )</pre>

UPDATE: Here is what I'm going to talk about.

Next weekend
I'm weighing my options for next weekend. I need to see David Ashe, I'd like to be in Montgomery on Sunday, and I haven't ruled out the MIGHTY. I've come up with the following two possibilities:

Friday: Teach, drive to Chattanooga, work with Ashe
Saturday: MIGHTY
Sunday: work with Ashe, drive back to GA

and

Thursday: Ashe comes here, do a bit of work Thursday night
Friday: teach, work with Ashe half a day
Saturday: work with Ashe, late drive to Montgomery
Sunday: drive back to GA

I guess I'm fishing for opinions on whether I should attend the MIGHTY--in particular if [info]gaffetheorist and I would make any progress on the lattice stuff. Also, I'd really like to see [info]sclark223 and [info]gaffetheorist's talks, as I'm giving a talk in October on one of those two topics, and I'd like to decide which one to pick...

Whoops
I got to class this morning and realized that I forgot to write out notes for the material that I was covering--DOH! It's been a long time since I've winged a lecture, but it went really well.

On another topic, yesterday marks the second Sunday in a row that I saw a wreck happen in front of me on the way from Montgomery to Carrollton. A girl spun a car on highway 27, crunching the front on a guard rail. She wasn't hurt. Last week I saw a guy in an airborne sedan cross the median of I-85, do a roll, spin, and land upside down in front of me. He wasn't hurt badly, but he was really shaken up.

English
I've been told on multiple occasions by students that I lack a southern accent. This test says my English is 45% Southern. I suppose the test is more a test of diction and colloquialism.

It would be nice if LJ would implement a basic TeX interpreter* that would allow one to use TeX code to write their entries. It would be nice to be able to use the Greek alphabet, fractions, and math symbols here. It'd also be nice to be able to take TeX files containing lists, headings, tables, etc, and paste them in without having to convert everything to html.

*Not to be confused with a BASIC TeX interpreter, which would be a bit bizarre**.

**According to Merriam-Webster, the word "bizarre" comes from the Italian word bizarro. I find that amusing.

i took this same test back in September. I could try to make a comparison of the result from now and from then, but I'm not feeling sufficiently motivated.
